What's up, folks? My name is John, but my friends call me Gravey -- Saul Gravey, and I am a digital artist & photographer currently based out Akron, Ohio -- land of LeBron James, DeVo, and (seriously) the best damn cheeseburgers on "BOB"'s Green Earth -- Swensons FTW!!!
It's hard to remember a time when I wasn't taking pictures of something; I got my first camera (a hand-me-down Ansco 126) sometime around my ninth birthday & started sneaking it into concerts a few years later. At 18, I was driven out of high school under "suspicion of being a cult leader", leading me to teach MYSELF the skills I'd need to further my education; by 21, I'd worked my way up to capturing live performances legally - first as a staff photographer & eventually photo editor for a Las Vegas based publication which, unfortunately, is no longer with us.
Sex, horror, rock n' roll... It was fun while it lasted.
I've gotta admit, over the years, I've had a blast -- but it wasn't always Jägerbombs & cheese fries... I've been run out of photo pits by overprotective bouncers, and held hostage by redneck, backwoods mechanics; I witnessed the great Slipknot-Mushroomhead feud of 1999 direct from the front lines and, at one particularly low point, had all my equipment & back film archive stolen from my home while away on vacation... You seriously can't make this stuff up.
On the other hand, I've also partied like (and with) a team of rock & porn stars, and could totally tell you tales of backstage exploits that rival those found between the tattered, whiskey-soaked pages of The Dirt, but a gentleman never tells...
And, besides, I'm saving those for my own book.
Realistically, though, I'm not getting any younger; I'm creeping past the wrong side of 40 much faster than I'd care to think about, have legitimately cheated death 2̶3̶ 24 times (and counting), but have somehow managed to live another day -- so now might be a good time to transition into something a bit more laid back; to spend time capturing the beauty in every day life, be it portraits, cityscapes, nature, helping to raise awareness for (in my humble opinion) worthwhile causes... whatever...
Let's get together & make something to remember!
Due to recent health complications (which is putting it mildly), I am ONLY accepting new clients via referral until further notice; if you know someone who's worked with me in the past, please ask them to contact me on your behalf & I'll be in touch as quickly as possible. Thank you in advance for your patience & understanding.
